Self Piercing Riveting is a cold forming process used to join two or three layers of material by driving a rivet through the top layers of material and upsetting the rivet in the lower layer without piercing the lower material. |
| |
Electric Setting Tool
The setting tool is driven by a electric brushless DC servo motor. The motor is coupled to a ballscrew spindle assembly by use of a sprocket. This allows precise control of the spindle position. The encoder enables rivet length verification, and material stack up measurement. The setting tool also incorporates an inline force transducer which is used to measure the entire force curve from the moment the rivet touches the base material to the completion of the joint formation. This 100% feedback virtually eliminates any chance of processing a poorly formed joint. |

Bowl feeding eliminates problems with rivet handling
This process automatically feeds the rivet to the setting tool using a rotary bowl to orient the rivet properly and then blows the rivet through a flexible urethane tube to the receiver. This eliminates the need for downtime normally associated with traditional tape fed systems.
An optional rivet divider can be used to couple two separate drum feeders to the same setting tool, which reduces system costs. |

Fast and precise
The Self Piercing Riveting system can form joints in 1.5 seconds. The spindle moves at 96mm/sec., and the rivet is fed through the feed tube in approximately 500ms. The servo motor control allows partial retract of the spindle to lower the cycle time. |

Flexible
The setting tool can be mounted on an automated robot, fixed automation, or manually operated. |
