Types of Studs

Emhart manufactures a wide variety of drawn arc weld studs. These studs are a critical component of the No-Hole fastening system.

Four distinct families of weld studs exist. They are the T-stud , General Threaded stud (including Xmas Tree), Large Flange stud and the Grounding stud.

As part of the No-Hole system, all of our studs are manufactured in conjunction with the mating fastener and the specified welding equipment. Emhart creates value for our customer by providing the entire fastening system.. This “system” results in lower risk, and consequently higher value.

T-Stud

The T-Stud is used primarily for low profile applications, where packaging constraints exist. Typical applications include, wire harness fasteners, small diameter hoses and body side trim moldings.

General Threaded Studs

General Threaded Studs (and Xmas Tree for coarser thread) are typically used for mounting different types of components and brackets. The most common general threaded stud is with an M6 diameter thread. Stud lengths generally range from 10 mm up to 30 mm. Performance specifications of 50 lbs/in of maximum torque and 1250 lbs tensile are typical.

Large Flange Studs

Large Flange studs are typically used for structural type applications where significant and torque and tensile forces are required. Performance specifications of 250 in./lbs and 3000 lbs. are typical for the Large Flange weld stud. As with all of our studs, a wide range of stud sizes exist.

Electrical Grounding Studs

Electrical Grounding Studs are used with a tremendous amount of success in the European automotive market for electrical grounding, this type of ground point attachment is extremely cost effective. The success in the European market has lead to accelerated usage in the North American market. All of the benefits of the NO-HOLE system are realized with this type of grounding method. In addition to lower overall cost, the electrical ground stud meets the electrical performance specifications for all of the automotive OEM manufacturers.

Emhart offers 2 types of electrical ground studs. The plastic cap grounding stud, and the stud/nut assembly. The plastic cap ground stud consist of a drawn arc weld stud with a preassembled plastic cap. The grounding stud is welded to the sheet metal with the plastic cap preassembled. The plastic cap protects the stud threads during the painting process. At the time of assembly, the plastic cap is then removed and the ground connection with ground terminal is made

The second type of grounding stud is the stud/nut assembly. This stud is the same as the plastic ground stud, except that the nut is used to secure the ground terminal. This grounding stud offers the added advantage of using the nut to protect the stud during painting as well as using the nut to secure the ground terminal. The stud/nut will meet electrical ground requirement of <0.5 milli ohm after 348 hour salt spray to ASTM B117-85. In addition, the stud/nut is capable of fastening three 0.8 mm thick terminals. Both the stud/nut is manufactured with a M6 diameter, and the plastic cap stud is manufactured in M6 and M8 diameters.
