NEW HAVEN, Conn., (August 29, 2002) – Emhart Teknologies today announced the start of a nationwide engineering design competition to identify and recognize outstanding innovation and applications in the field of product design.
The contest period runs September 3 through November 15, 2002 and is open to engineering professionals, students, academics and the general public not affiliated with Emhart or NASA Tech Briefs, a co-sponsor.
The grand prize is a hybrid automobile or $20,000 cash. First prize is a Segway Transporter or a trip for four to Florida to attend a space shuttle launch and tour NASA's Kennedy Space Center. There are also three second-place prizes of DeWalt Power Tool Combination Kits, and 30 merit prizes of Black & Decker tools. Every qualified entrant will receive a POP® PowerLink 30 repair kit/hand rivet tool (a $50 value) as an entry gift.
“Emhart has become the global leader in the design and creation of unique assembly technologies through the application of innovative problem solving,” said Paul A. Gustafson, president and chief executive officer, Emhart Teknologies. “Finding new and creative solutions to fastening challenges is what drives our people and our company. We know there are designers nationwide who share our passion, so beginning today we're giving them the opportunity to see their dreams come true in the Emhart Design Contest,” he said.
The Emhart “Create The Future” Design Contest has three entry categories:
- Everyday products – Designers may enter a significant functional or ergonomic new product, or upgrade to an existing product that improves quality of life.
- Safety – Entrants may submit a mechanical or electromechanical device designed to improve personal safety during travel, work, recreation, or at home.
- Transportation – For a mechanical or electromechanical design that improves the functionality, performance, or cost basis of transportation product(s).
Winners of the competition will be honored in Chicago at the National Design Engineering Show at a special awards presentation at the John Hancock Center on Monday evening, March 3, 2003.
Those wishing to enter the Emhart “Create The Future” Design Contest can complete and submit the official entry form at www.emhartcontest.com, and send an illustration of their design idea in .PDF, .GIF, .JPG or .TIF formats. Entries can also be submitted via U.S. mail by sending the entry form and illustration to: Emhart Design Contest c/o ABPI International, 317 Madison Avenue #1900, New York, NY 10017.
Judging the contest are Gustafson and other Emhart Teknologies executives from several worldwide locations and 15 judges selected from NASA Tech Briefs’ advisory board. Entries will be judged on innovation, manufacturability, marketability and cost-effectiveness. Complete rules and eligibility for the contest are found at www.emhartcontest.com.
“Enter your most innovative design and you could win a significant prize,” Gustafson said. “More importantly, you'll get the worldwide recognition and support you need to take your idea from the drawing board to the production line. After all, Emhart believes that when it comes to innovative design, anything's possible, and our passion is to create the future.”
